Creativity, Community, and Letting Go: Lessons from 20 Years in Business
Quote: “Creativity isn’t about knowing where you’re going. It’s about following the thread and discovering where it takes you.” – Anonymous
Running a creative business is about much more than making beautiful things.
It’s about growth, personal as much as professional.
Creativity and business: finding the balance
For a long time, I believed I had to choose between being creative and being structured.
With experience, I’ve learned that the two must coexist.
Creativity needs space, freedom, and intuition.
A business, however, needs grounding, decisions, and direction.
Over the years, I’ve learned to prioritise alignment over constant growth, sustainability over
exhaustion, and meaning over trends. That balance is still evolving, and probably always will
be.
Creating a community
Creativity can feel lonely, especially when you work independently.
But what truly allows a business to grow and feel alive is community.
I’m currently working on creating a brand-new community space that will bring together both my
Tom & Lily Creations customers and Broderie & Colour Box subscribers.
A place where colour, stitching, and well-being meet.
A space for inspiration, sharing, slowing down, and reconnecting, with lots of beautiful things
to come.
What 20 years have taught me
Twenty years in business have taught me that I can’t please everyone, and that this is
perfectly okay.
Criticism, when you allow it to be constructive, is often a powerful tool for growth.
I’ve learned to trust my intuition and follow the path that feels right, even when it doesn’t seem
logical or obvious.
I’ve also learned that not everyone stays in your life forever, and that as you evolve, some
people naturally fall away.
At the same time, new people appear. Sometimes at exactly the right moment.
Yes, there’s a slightly woo-woo side to this, but energy, intuition, and meaningful encounters
are very much part of my business journey.
Looking ahead
I don’t know if I’ll still be doing this in another twenty years, but right now, I’m happy to keep
going.
I’d love to develop my chromotherapy practice further and help more people through colour and
light.
To grow this new community, explore new creative paths, and continue designing with joy and
intention.
There will be more colour, more conversations, more beautiful designs, and new adventures
ahead.
The story continues 🌈
Happy Stitching!
