Why Do Our Colour Tastes Change with the Seasons? Or Is It Just Me?

Why Do Our Colour Tastes Change with the Seasons? (Or Is It Just Me?)
Have you ever noticed that the colours you’re drawn to shift as the seasons change? One moment you’re swooning over soft pastels and fresh greens, and the next you’re craving bold corals or rich autumnal hues. I used to think it was just me, until I realised, this is absolutely a thing.
Whether you’re a stitcher, painter, dyer, or general colour lover, it’s likely your creative brain is dancing to the rhythm of the seasons. Here’s why:
1. We’re Surrounded by Seasonal Colour Cues
Nature is the world’s greatest colourist. In spring, we’re treated to a symphony of delicate blossoms and tender greens. Summer bursts onto the scene with bright skies, turquoise waters, and juicy fruit shades. Autumn slows things down with golden leaves, berry reds, and earthy browns. Winter brings its own palette of frost-bitten blues, crisp whites, and deep jewel tones.
Even without realising it, we absorb all of this, and our creative instincts respond in kind. It’s no wonder we reach for different threads, fabrics, or paint pots as the seasons change.

2. Our Emotions Shift with the Light
There’s a psychological side to it too. The seasons affect our moods, energy levels, and even our sleep patterns. Lighter days in spring and summer bring a sense of renewal, activity, and brightness, and we often find ourselves drawn to lighter, happier shades. Autumn and winter encourage reflection, calm, and comfort, which might explain a sudden desire for warm ochres, deep purples, or stormy greys.
Colour isn’t just visual, it’s emotional. And as our emotions shift, so do our colour cravings.
3. Our Creative Cycles Are Seasonal Too
If you’re someone who makes or designs, you probably find your ideas come in waves. You might be full of energy and new ideas in the spring, or find yourself wanting to create cosy, layered work in autumn. It’s all part of the ebb and flow of creativity.
As a hand-dyer and designer, I’ve noticed this in my own work. Even without planning it, my seasonal thread packs and colour palettes tend to align with what the season feels like. And the funny thing is, my customers are drawn to exactly the same colours at the same time.
Coincidence? I think not.
So… Is It Just Me?
Nope. It’s all of us. Whether consciously or not, we’re deeply connected to the world around us. The light, the temperature, the sky, all of it informs how we feel, what we notice, and what colours we want to wrap ourselves in.
So next time you suddenly fall out of love with last month’s palette and into a brand new one, don’t worry. It’s not fickleness, it’s seasonally inspired brilliance.
And you, have your colour inspirations changed recently? Which shades are drawing you in right now?
Happy Stitching!
